For the first time since 1999 Nokia market share is below the 20 per cent line. In addition, Nokia is no more the world's largest manufacturer of mobiles. Samsung market share increased by 16 per cent over the last two quarters, and is now the only producer above 20 per cent. For the Finns, this means their share has been more than halved over the short time span of 4 years. The only real surprise in the first quarter figures is the gigantic leap by Apple. From zero to eight per cent in four years is remarkable, and no one has done that before. When you keep in mind that Apple is also commanding over-the-top-prices, this truly is an outstanding performance. LG continues to slide in this quarter, down from 5,6 to 3,5 in one year.
In the first quarter of 2012 total sales were 418 million units, equivavalent to approx. 1,7 billion units on a yearly basis. This will eventually be a 5 per cent decrease from the year before.
